Nourishing Communities: Inspiring Health Through Healthy Eating and Physical Activity

The "Healthy Eating and Physical Activity" campaign embarked on a mission to inspire lasting change within lower-income African American and Hispanic communities residing in priority zip codes in Charlotte. The campaign's primary objectives were to elevate awareness about the significance of incorporating more fruits and vegetables into daily diets and promoting daily physical activity. The fundamental premise was that these lifestyle changes could lead to long-lasting positive impacts on the health and well-being of these communities.

Beyond fostering individual transformation, the campaign carried an essential message of adults leading by example. The understanding that children observe and learn from the adults in their lives underpinned the campaign's approach. Encouraging adults to take the lead in adopting healthier eating habits and increased physical activity served as a crucial component of the campaign's strategy.

Additionally, the campaign aimed to increase awareness of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits and local farmers' markets within these communities. By doing so, the campaign sought to expand knowledge and choices regarding food shopping, offering alternatives beyond traditional grocery stores.

Our Unique Approach

Recognizing the multifaceted challenges at hand, our unique approach involved crafting messaging that blended cultural relevance with sensitivity, providing practical, cost-free, and low-cost solutions to ensure accessibility, and dispelling the perception that healthier living was beyond reach, all while fostering a deep resonance with the communities we sought to empower.

Challenge:
Raising Awareness and Fostering Trust

The "Healthy Eating and Physical Activity" campaign encountered multifaceted challenges, rooted in the need to create messaging that would authentically resonate with the lower-income African American and Hispanic communities, particularly in the context of a subject as culturally significant as food. Concerning physical activity, the challenge extended to ensuring accessibility, recognizing that limited access to resources was a significant issue. Thus, the campaign aimed to encourage simple daily activities that could be undertaken anywhere, regardless of one's circumstances.

An important aspect of this challenge was the necessity of cultural relevance while maintaining the sensitivity required to ensure that the messaging would genuinely land and be well-received within these communities. Recognizing that cost often served as a barrier to healthier living, the perception that fresh and nutritious foods were prohibitively expensive needed to be addressed. Unfortunately, in many of these communities, this perception aligned with reality. Access to fresh produce was indeed limited.

In the context of physical activity, the campaign confronted the reality of cost barriers. To overcome this challenge, the campaign focused on providing practical, cost-free, and low-cost solutions that individuals could implement immediately, aligning with the campaign's commitment to making positive lifestyle changes accessible to all.

Solution:
Empowering through Relatable Messaging and Culturally Relevant Content

To address the multifaceted challenges of the "Healthy Eating and Physical Activity" campaign, our approach centered on the creation of assets that were not only relatable but also provided new information and fresh perspectives. We maintained the core concept of family and community as the driving force behind this campaign, crafting messaging that was sensitive to the unique needs of each audience.

For each community, we ensured that the campaign featured culturally accurate representations of food, carefully integrating messaging about incorporating more fruits and vegetables into everyday meals. Rather than advocating a complete dietary overhaul, our approach focused on the concept of addition. We encouraged individuals to add more fruits and vegetables to their meals, fostering the idea that small, incremental changes could make a significant impact on health.

Additionally, we emphasized the vital role parents and caregivers play in leading by example. Our messaging depicted the experience of exhibiting healthy habits and how such actions could be easily adopted by children. This emphasis on familial role modeling served as a cornerstone of our approach.

The physical activity component of the campaign was presented in an educational manner, reinforcing the message that "a little bit each day counts." We sought to encourage daily movement, emphasizing that it doesn't necessitate a significant time commitment all at once. Culturally relevant messaging was woven into this aspect as well, ensuring that it resonated deeply within the communities we were addressing. Furthermore, assets tailored to the Hispanic population were crafted in Spanish, to ensure accessibility and cultural resonance.

Results and Outcomes:

The "Healthy Eating and Physical Activity" campaign yielded a significant impact, reaching an estimated total of 13,055,510 impressions across various media types. The strategic distribution of messages through radio, print, digital, social, transit, and billboards allowed the campaign to effectively permeate the targeted lower-income African American and Hispanic communities in priority zip codes in Charlotte. Notably, radio broadcasts reached 2,363,000 individuals, while digital platforms engaged 1,599,802 users. The campaign strategically utilized culturally relevant assets, including Spanish-language materials specifically tailored and crafted for the Hispanic population, contributing to the resonating success of the messaging. The comprehensive media mix, coupled with an empathetic and culturally sensitive approach, not only raised awareness about the importance of incorporating more fruits and vegetables into daily diets and promoting daily physical activity but also fostered a community-wide understanding of accessible and practical ways to lead healthier lives. These impressive results underscore the power of strategic communication in fostering positive lifestyle changes within diverse communities.
